Promising Quality in Angus

Before Certified Angus Beef, consumers didn’t know what “Angus” meant. Angus meant little, except to its breeders. A strict adherence to quality through its 10 carcass specifications continues to serve as the foundation for maintaining the breed’s premium beef position in the marketplace and drives demand for registered Angus genetics.

Apply by April 1 for Colvin Scholarship

The production agriculture, undergraduate and graduate scholarship categories each have tailored requirements. In 2025, the Colvin Scholarship Fund supported 27 students with awards ranging from $2,000 to $7,500.

The Angus Argument

There’s no denying CAB has helped dramatically expand the market share for registered Angus genetics. Arguably, that success has encouraged several other breeds to adopt a black hide color by incorporating registered Angus genetics into their breeding programs and registries.

CAB Premiums Reach Record $182 Million

Annual grid, formula and contract premiums paid on CAB carcasses in 2021 totaled $182 million, up from the 2019 record of $92 million. Cattlemen who raise black Angus-influenced cattle that meet the brand’s specifications have the chance to earn more than ever before.

Producers Can Influence Sustainability

Sustainability is a new target for producers. While there are no plans to meet these goals yet, there is interest in how cattle can be part of the solution. It comes down to the adage, “trust but verify,” and verification will need to come from those raising beef.

Demand for Premium Quality Beef High, Supply Showing Improvement

Fourth quarter demand for premium quality grade beef carcasses is predictably high. End users—grocery stores in particular—place orders several weeks ahead of the December timeline to fulfill holiday middle-meat needs. Prime grade carcass supplies have disappointed throughout the year with 11.2% fewer total pounds of Prime carcasses acquired so far.

Tight Cattle Supplies and Increasing Carcass Weights

The current cattle markets can provide a history lesson for those new to the scene. To give a quick recap of that era: record-high prices, fueled by a supply chain starved for cattle numbers, came to an abrupt end. This signaled the end of tight cattle supplies, caused by drought liquidation, and beef cattle producers were able to restock the nation’s cow herd.
