Future Beef Leaders Receive $100,000

The Colvin Scholarship Fund awarded 27 students a combined $100,000 for their pursuit of innovation, growth and leadership in the beef industry. Each recipient is actively pursuing a career in production agriculture, industry research or other agricultural endeavors. With their aspirations for success in the beef business, they are continuing the legacy of Certified Angus Beef’s (CAB) co-founder and long-time executive director, Louis “Mick” Colvin.

Using the Targeting the Brand™ logo in sale catalogs helps commercial cattlemen and seedstock producers advance their herds and orient them toward more CAB qualifiers. To earn the logo, registered Angus cattle must have a minimum Marbling EPD of +0.65 and a +55 $G. This makes it easy to identify bulls with added carcass value, and potentially more dollars for your bottom line.

Trends Entrenched

Certified Angus Beef ® brand supply trends will continue to see the push and pull of cattle management responding to tight cattle supplies. Estimates for this year’s corn crop suggest an exceptionally large yield, continuing downward price pressure. This, coupled with freshly printed record replacement feeder cattle prices, will work to entrench the modern feedyard motivation to push days on feed to new heights with carcass weights following along to new records.

Cattle Contract Library Pilot Kicks Off

While there are several styles of contracts represented in the library perhaps the take-home message is that there are fewer mysteries within the library than one may have thought. Carcass outcomes are widely emphasized in the contract mix and quality is the largest driver of premiums and discounts.

Calm Before the Storm

With beef supplies tighter this year, year-to-date supplies are only fractionally smaller than a year ago. Yet the second quarter promises rapid tightening of fed cattle availability just as spring grilling demand will ramp up. Cattle supplies will be the opposite of robust, and boxed beef values will reflect it with sharp upward moves.
