While Magnum hasn’t always had pens filled with Angus-influenced cattle, they’ve invested in infrastructure, improved quality-based marketing and sought better genetics. Their dedication to detail and employee appreciation drive their success to high-quality beef production.
Michigan Angus Family Earns Ambassador Award
Seldom Rest Farms in Michigan, known for show-ring success, receives the CAB 2023 Ambassador Award for sharing their beef production story with Meijer grocery communications team and other CAB partners. The Foster family shares their passion for Angus cattle while fostering connections within the beef supply chain and promoting the Angus breed and CAB’s role in the industry.
North Dakota Partnership Earns CAB Progressive Partner Award
The Bruner and Wendel families earned the 2023 CAB Progressive Partner award by selling high-quality beef through Dakota Angus, LLC, as part of the CAB Ranch To Table program. They focus on their commitment to quality, data-driven decisions, achieve impressive CAB and Prime percentages and offer high-quality beef directly to consumers in their communities.

Few things in cattle market trends are entirely predictable but the fact that carcass weights peak in November is as close to a sure bet as one could identify. Genetic selection for growth and advancing mature size has fueled the long-term increase in carcass weights.
Credit End Meats With CAB Value-Add
We focused on fourth-quarter middle meat demand as a beef price driver in the last edition of the Insider. This is certainly the case in the current data as rib and tenderloins are pricing near their annual highs. However, a look at annual price trends across the beef carcass shows increasing contributions to CAB premiums from both ends of the carcass.

New calf marketing routes
For the 70% or more of beef calves born last spring, more than the usual share veered from traditional roads to the feedyard come fall. Backgrounding those calves opened gates to several new revenue paths, though not without risk.
Matchmaking the yard
Choosing a feedyard is a bit like selecting a life partner. Feedyards offer different marketing opportunities and strategies. A manager should be able to look at a customer’s pen and know, “I have a good market for those cattle. I can handle it.”
Find what works, stick to it
He’s a sixth generation farmer and grew up on a cattle farm and apple orchard. She’s a past chemistry teacher but now works full-time on the farm with her husband. Together, they closely manage their bottom line.
