Future Beef Leaders Receive $100,000

The Colvin Scholarship Fund awarded 27 students a combined $100,000 for their pursuit of innovation, growth and leadership in the beef industry. Each recipient is actively pursuing a career in production agriculture, industry research or other agricultural endeavors. With their aspirations for success in the beef business, they are continuing the legacy of Certified Angus Beef’s (CAB) co-founder and long-time executive director, Louis “Mick” Colvin.

CAB Premiums Reach Record $182 Million

Annual grid, formula and contract premiums paid on CAB carcasses in 2021 totaled $182 million, up from the 2019 record of $92 million. Cattlemen who raise black Angus-influenced cattle that meet the brand’s specifications have the chance to earn more than ever before.

Certified Angus Beef ® brand supply trends will continue to see the push and pull of cattle management responding to tight cattle supplies. Estimates for this year’s corn crop suggest an exceptionally large yield, continuing downward price pressure. This, coupled with freshly printed record replacement feeder cattle prices, will work to entrench the modern feedyard motivation to push days on feed to new heights with carcass weights following along to new records.

Rib and Tenderloin Defy Gravity

Fed cattle prices found a stable range in the past three weeks after making the $3/cwt. upward leap the week of Thanksgiving. Last week’s negotiated cash trade was on a smaller weekly head count and packers kept a lid on the upward price momentum.

Demand for Premium Quality Beef High, Supply Showing Improvement

Fourth quarter demand for premium quality grade beef carcasses is predictably high. End users—grocery stores in particular—place orders several weeks ahead of the December timeline to fulfill holiday middle-meat needs. Prime grade carcass supplies have disappointed throughout the year with 11.2% fewer total pounds of Prime carcasses acquired so far.
