“I wish I could just move west and buy a ranch.” It’s something I’ve heard my dad mutter for years. He’s been around agriculture all his life, stacking hay as a teen and raising Hereford steers for the freezer as an adult. But Maryland is not big country. These days, he’s living vicariously through his three daughters’ 4-H projects and FFA events (and my internship here at CAB of course).
I’ve always been fascinated with history. From the Founding Fathers in grade school to the battles of World War II, the stories of those who came before us and the great feats they accomplished continue to intrigue me. There’s a lot of history out on the range, too, as I’ve learned from ranchers whose operations have stood the test of time.
Could the Certified Angus Beef ® brand reach a billion pounds in sales? It was an audacious question back at the turn of the century when first considered. Some of the CAB team at the time were, candidly, more optimistic than me. We did the math and looked at so many of the trend lines that were in place from acceptance rates to certified head count.

When Steve Knoll went to buy a few Angus bulls to put on his registered Salers herd, it changed everything. “I was blown away with what the bulls were bringing. The bulls I thought I would just go and buy and bring home, I couldn’t afford,” says the Hereford, Texas, rancher. Instead, his trailer carried two registered Angus cow-calf pairs. One nursing a heifer, the other, a bull.
My commercial Angus cows are every bit as important to me as the registered Angus bulls I use, and that is why I stay with the most predictable sires in the world.
