Promising Quality in Angus

Before Certified Angus Beef, consumers didn’t know what “Angus” meant. Angus meant little, except to its breeders. A strict adherence to quality through its 10 carcass specifications continues to serve as the foundation for maintaining the breed’s premium beef position in the marketplace and drives demand for registered Angus genetics.

Apply by April 1 for Colvin Scholarship

The production agriculture, undergraduate and graduate scholarship categories each have tailored requirements. In 2025, the Colvin Scholarship Fund supported 27 students with awards ranging from $2,000 to $7,500.

The Angus Argument

There’s no denying CAB has helped dramatically expand the market share for registered Angus genetics. Arguably, that success has encouraged several other breeds to adopt a black hide color by incorporating registered Angus genetics into their breeding programs and registries.

Working in Balance

Cattlemen have a responsibility to look critically at their own herd, determine the areas that warrant improvement, and select animals accordingly. Stockmen bring immense value by objectively evaluating phenotypes, regardless of what the numbers say, and setting individual breeding objectives.

From Decline to Dominance

Initiated from a simple yet visionary idea, and pursued through the grit and tenacity of Angus breeders seeking a better future for the breed and Association members, it’s no accident that Certified Angus Beef is where it is today.

Ranch, beef, sales education rolled into one

You don’t hear of too many September graduations. But then again, there aren’t that many MBA programs that consist of ranch visits, meats labs and sales sessions. Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) launched its Master’s of Brand Advantages program in late 2010 and the first class will receive their degrees at the company’s annual conference in Sunriver, Ore., later this month. The second class is in progress.

Beef picture: record prices in, out

If there was ever a good news/bad news story in the cattle feeding industry, this year is a classic example. Market analyst Dan Basse, AgResource Company, warned cattle feeders of continued upward pressure on input prices while also pointing out the “bright spots” of increasing exports and high cattle prices. Basse spoke at the Feeding Quality Forum in Omaha, Neb., and Garden City, Kan., last month.

Air, water quality keynote Feeding Quality Forum

“Going green” is a stirring buzz phrase everywhere, no less in cattle feeding. Some shudder as they think of the regulations it entails. Others argue that agriculture is the original green industry and producers are closer to the land and natural resources than anybody else.

Deets honored by Feeding Quality Forum

Some people set out to make a lasting change on their industry, but Max Deets, Beloit, Kan., says he never thought of himself in that light. Instead the cattle feeder’s natural leadership ability, quest for improvement and genuine respect for others led him to some of the most influential roles in the beef business.

Profit. That’s a word cattlemen would like to hear more often in connection with their herds. “Managing for Success,” a seminar series focused on that very topic, is coming to South Dakota at the end of August.

Quality Soaring Higher

Increased Prime carcass production is a boon to sales growth in this category for both Certified Angus Beef and the industry as a whole. A smaller Prime cutout premium above Choice also means greater adoption of this premium product tier by grocers and restaurants. All of the above lead to a firmer foothold for beef as the protein of choice for consumers.
