The Power of Curiosity

Dr. Del Miles built a career on asking better questions to inform smarter decisions. Throughout his career, he challenged assumptions, advanced science-based management and helped cattle feeders prevent problems before they started. His influence reaches beyond feedyards, shaping the way veterinarians, researchers and cattlemen think about herd health.

$100,000 to Future Beef Leaders

Interest in quality beef production continues to grow. This year, the Colvin Scholarship Fund awarded $100,000 to 24 students across the country, helping them continue their education and prepare for careers that will contribute to the strength and advancement of the beef industry.

From Data to Dollars

The journey to produce high-quality beef presents market volatility and management challenges. But today, there are data, technology, tools and partners to identify the best value and how to attain it. At the 2026 Feeding Quality Forum, each speaker added to the same message on Aug. 4 and 5 in Amarillo, TX.

Eye on the Target

Regardless of a producer’s goal, each genetic decision takes you a step closer or further from achieving it. Targeting the Brand is a tool for cattlemen pursuing quality gains, helping commercial producers know and best leverage the value of their Angus cattle on sale day.

Defining the Margins of Quality

Driven by genetic selection and improved management, carcass quality has advanced significantly, most notably through more marbling. Yet, with nearly two-thirds of Angus-type carcasses falling short of brand standards, understanding why is critical to balance the economic incentives of added weight against CAB® product size and consistency requirements.

Control stocker risk with management

Backgrounding may seem simple: Buy calves right, feed them well, keep them healthy and sell them for more. But all the details behind that list prove how difficult the job can be, as noted during the recent “Backgrounding for Quality” field day at White Brothers Cattle Co., near Chickasha, Okla.

The grass IS greener for backgrounders

Cinch up that seatbelt. This cattle market madness is only going to get more dramatic. You may think you’ve been on a rollercoaster ride, but Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University (OSU) ag economist, shared data at a recent field day that could wow the most seasoned thrill seeker.

Responding to demand

Charting a course in the beef industry means acting on market signals and being ready for the reactions to those actions. “The message of consumer demand is more complicated than it has ever been,” John Stika said at the Kansas State University Cattlemen’s Day earlier this month.

Team building in the herd

Preventing a “draft bust” in quarterback selection is the first step to build a winning team, says Pfizer Animal Health veterinarian Jason Osterstock. But the genetic epidemiologist isn’t talking about football or the gridiron; he’s analyzing sire selections for beef cattle herds.

CAB rewards student commitment with Colvin Scholarships

The CAB Annual Conference golf outing and auction raise these Colvin Scholarship funds. Top undergraduate and graduate recipients win all-expense-paid trips to the 2012 Annual Conference in White Sulfur Springs, W. Va., where they can interact with leaders throughout the production, packing, retail and food service industries.

ATI and CAB team up to educate

Even the best speakers can’t make an audience feel what it’s like on a farm. There are no words that can replace the actual experience of seeing cattle first hand—watching them roam the pasture or eat out of the feedbunk.

Seasonal Carcass Impacts

An overriding theme across the past 18 months in the beef sector has been increased carcass weights. In general, fed steer and heifer carcasses averaging 25-30 lb. heavier year over year has been a net positive for the industry.
