Meet the newest contributor to the Black Ink blog
I’ve always been pretty passionate about beef cattle and beef quality, that is why my position as a Beef Cattle Specialist for Certified Angus Beef has fit me so well since I joined CAB in 2004!
From the first time I began to get acquainted with beef quality grades while in high school, followed by meat grading and evaluation classes in college, I began to realize how important beef quality is, not only to me, but to the consuming public as well.
While an Agricultural Education major in college, I was a student teacher in vocational agriculture. I taught the meat grading and judging to students in Guymon, OK. I also coached an FFA meats judging team, which taught me even more about quality and yield grading of beef carcasses! Later, as a county extension agent, our county fair cattle went to a local packer where the beef carcasses were evaluated in the cooler.
Combining all of this with my exposure to cattle production from a very early age on my family’s diversified crop and livestock farm in Kansas, my love of the cattle business,and deep-rooted passion of the agricultural lifestyle,I now live and enjoy it every single day.
That’s why my contribution to the Black Ink blog, “On the Road to Quality,” will focus on farmers, ranchers, feedlots, and industry. I hope that you share my love of these same things, and will enjoy it as I share stories and pictures from my travels!

Progress from small steps
Every day is a chance to learn and get better. Thousands of others like my new friends in Alabama are taking steps to meet the shifts in consumer demand, and to know more. Small steps in the right direction can start now. Even if it’s just recording a snapshot of where you are today, a benchmark for tomorrow.
Not perfect, but working to get better
The CAB Cattleman Connection team heard its name called more than once in the virtual ceremonies, and each time came a sense of personal accomplishment, but even better: confirmation that we’re getting better at our craft. I hope that means we’re doing a better job for you.
