Lunch with the prez

If you follow us on Facebook, you likely know how we spent our lunch hour on Presidents’ Day — hosting a live chat between John Stika, CAB’s own commander-in-chief and you, the brand’s suppliers. But just in case you missed the conversation, we thought a little recap was in order. Here are a few of the highlights:

Question: How can you really tell if it’s a Certified Angus Beef® brand steak?

Answer: You have to look for the logo. That’s the only way to be sure! And even then, we track every pound of product sold to make sure that those that are advertising the brand are truly buying the product.

Stika enjoyed taking questions from Facebook users last week during our chat.

Question: What is the brand doing through product development and promotion to increase demand for CAB products?

Answer: First and foremost, two years ago we invested in our state-of-the-art Education and Culinary Center. While it doesn’t necessarily develop new products in and of itself, it provides us a venue to meet with partners, both domestic and international, to identify their needs and create product solutions. A big part of what we are doing today is identifying ways to take ever-increasing carcass weights and still provide products that are the correct portion size for retailers and restaurants. In addition, for many years now, we’ve had a Value Added Products team that focuses on taking popular as well as underutilized cuts and adding value to them. This would include deli items, frankfurters, precooked items, marinated product, etc. Today we have over 150 items and it represents around 3 percent of our business.

Question: My local grocery store doesn’t sell CAB. What can I do to help change that?

Answer: The first step would be to ask for it and do so by name — Certified Angus Beef. Retailers want to keep their customers happy and carry the products that their shoppers demand. At the same time, this may not be enough. In some instances, your retailer might not be as aware of our brand and its quality specifications. Feel free to share our consumer website (www.certifiedangusbeef.com) with them so they can gather more information and better understand why you want to buy the brand. If your local retailer does not believe they have access to our brand, please have them contact us. We’d be happy to visit with them about options. If none of this works, then I suggest you go to that website and look up where you can buy the product and perhaps seek out a new retail store near you. Thanks for asking!

Question: How can beef producers learn more about the requirements for becoming a CAB supplier? What is involved in the process?

Answer: The best part about Certified Angus Beef is if you have quality-focused Angus genetics in your herd, you’re likely already a supplier to our brand. One of the best parts is there is no membership fee or anything to sign up for be a beneficiary. Entry into this brand truly is as easy as making genetic selections in your cow herd with the consumer in mind! Just using an Angus bull is not enough, though. Angus-influenced cattle much meet our 10 science-based specifications found at http://www.cabpartners.com/about/about.php. To hit these specs consistently, the highly predictable registered Angus bull is your quickest way to make progress.

Before Certified Angus Beef, consumers didn’t know what “Angus” meant. Angus meant little, except to its breeders. A strict adherence to quality through its 10 carcass specifications continues to serve as the foundation for maintaining the breed’s premium beef position in the marketplace and drives demand for registered Angus genetics.

The Angus Argument

There’s no denying CAB has helped dramatically expand the market share for registered Angus genetics. Arguably, that success has encouraged several other breeds to adopt a black hide color by incorporating registered Angus genetics into their breeding programs and registries.
