As in any business, taking on additional risk is just that: risky. But owning cattle beyond weaning also offers the opportunities for greater rewards. This list is provided for informational purposes, not as a guarantee of profit or endorsement of any of the feedyards.

Capture more value

Premium calves need, and deserve, premium marketing. If you want buyers to bid with confidence, you must convey more detail on the value you’ve added to your calf crop. They need confidence that they’re likely to stay healthy, gain and hit the high-quality target when they’re finished.

Whether you’re looking to sell feeder calves at auction, directly to a feeder or retain some ownership all the way through finishing, repeatable performance will build credibility with buyers year over year. When you get carcass data back, use that to find out what’s working well and identify opportunities to improve.

Where to start

This list is only a starting place to help you find the right fit. Like hiring a new employee, it may take some time to find the right partner. Just remember in your search, nothing replaces the human element; the cattle business is all about relationships.

Conduct several phone conversations to narrow the list, then consider making personal visits to find the feeder that best matches your goals. Get to know the management team and their philosophies, too.

Success in feeding your cattle will depend on your comfort, trust and communication with each other.
